Steak of Origin

About the Competition

We have been considering the future of the Steak Of Origin (SOO) competition over the past few months and are now in a position to update you all.

After careful deliberation, we have decided that we are going to discontinue with SOO and therefore the proposed competition in 2019 and beyond will not take place.

I would like to acknowledge the invaluable support of PGG Wrightson over the years and in particular their naming rights support in 2018. In the main, we were very pleased with this year's event at Mystery Creek. There were a good number of entries which generated significant national print and broadcast media coverage. And to be clear, PGG Wrightson were right on board with their support for the 2019 event had it taken place.

As you will all know, our sector is facing significant challenges and issues around consumer demand and perceptions. Given the significant number of hours it takes to organise SOO coupled with the budgetary pressures we are facing, we feel that this is the correct decision.

Having had an active role in the creation of the competition, I have seen the delight and tangible commercial benefits it has delivered the participants and medallists over the years. There has been some great Steak of Origin industry dinners bringing many in the supply chain together. I shall certainly miss them and the entire event. However things do move on.

I would personally like thank everyone who has entered or played a role in the competition. It has been a great ride and something we can all be proud of.

If anyone would like to discuss our decision further, I would be more than happy to field any questions. Feel free to contact me via the details below.

Kind Regards and thank you,

Rod Slater
