Rotokare Scenic Reserve Trust
The Rotokare Scenic Reserve Trust hosted a volunteer event at the start of their annual hihi pre-breeding survey.
The Trust survey the hihi population prior to breeding each season to get an idea of the size of the population and how they have survived the winter ( Hihi are national endangered and exist at only 8 sites in New Zealand).
These birds require intense management, including the provision of sugar water every three days and proving artificial breeding boxes. The Trust’s regular volunteers, under the guidance of our conservation manager, take care of most of this work.
According to Trust Administrator, Tricia Jamieson, it was wonderful to be able to offer each of them a really delicious BBQ lunch after their hard work and has directly contributed to the wellbeing of our volunteer community and ecological restoration at Taranki's only fenced sanctuary.
