#SheLooksLikeMe: Maria - Pak 'n Save Rangiora

What does your job entail?

Preparing special cuts of meat; cut, trim, bone, tie and grind meats, such as beef, pork, poultry, and fish, to prepare meat in cooking form. I also prepare and place meat cuts and products in the display counter, so they will appear attractive and catch the shopper’s eye. I really believe that it is important to know how to judge the quality of meat and I’d say that’s one of my foremost skills.

What attracted you to this industry?

I love eating meat and working with meat - in particular, high-quality meat. I also had a desire to learn what happens from farm to plate. My job allows me the opportunity to develop my creativity and to be inspired by new ingredients and flavours to take meat to the next level. I believe food binds us together and love being a part of that.

What have been some of the challenges you’ve faced and overcome in your career?

This career is predominantly male and is physically demanding. Also, my height! I’m 5ft tall which can be a challenge when deboning a full carcass. I’m not one to give up, I let my passion drive me.

Why are women in the meat sector so important?

Women bring more versatility and a different approach to the sector. As women, we have a special eye for finer details which I believe is an advantage. Their delicate cuts can look very attractive to customers.

What is your advice to the industry to encourage more women?

If you love food do not believe in stereotypes, such as age, gender, type of work. Go for it! The butchery trade has so many fields to be explored. Get trained! Let your talent shine.

What is your advice to any young women considering a similar career?

Believe in yourself and go for gold. The opportunities are endless. We possess the skills to be the best in our profession, with our touch, in our approach to the customer, and the advice we give. You’ll meet the greatest butchers in NZ and will learn from them. Doors will keep opening into your future.

You have competed in the ANZCO Foods Butcher Apprentice of the Year competitions - how has this impacted your career?

Being able to compete and win the Upper South Island Butcher Apprentice of the Year for 2 years 2019 &2021 and also, competing in 3 Grand Finals in a row gave me the visibility to showcase my talent and has opened many jobs opportunities. By putting myself out there I have impacted my career enormously. The competitions also gave me the opportunity to showcase my creativity and knowledge and introduced me to the best butchers in New Zealand and internationally. When I look back I can’t believe how far I’ve come and how much I’ve learned!
